IPM
Integrated Pest Management
The technology and approaches to pest management have changed significantly since 1980 and the change continues. The days of the exterminator armed with a spray tank are not viewed as favorably as in the past; instead, current approaches emphasize inspection based programs and new technologies that use fewer pesticides. Most common pest invades from the outside and is not a pest in the truest sense but rather are unwelcome guest inside our dwelling. There are many alternatives to traditional pest control methods available today. ELS is a leader in the landscape industry in holistically understanding these concerns.
Turf Magazine article on IPM
Weed control is a more difficult than insects in terms of controlling weeds in green grass lawns with product applications. Weeds are often just plants in undesirable locations, like that green grass lawn that creeps over into the garden or flowbeds. However, studies have shown that good soil conditions, proper fertilization and watering will allow the turf grass to out compete weeds. This does not happen over night or even in one growing season.
Mulch and cultivation in flower and shrub beds will often control weeds very successfully. Physical barriers, metal, rock or masonry edging are required to keep creeping grass, like Bermuda, out of these beds. Once established, removing these grasses can be rather difficult to remove manually.
Landscape Design and Maintenance is the cornerstone of most common pest problems. Landscaping is one of the greatest attractions for crawling and many other types of pests. The closer the landscaping is to the perimeter of the building, the greater the likelihood for pests including rodents are to enter the structure.
Some pests do thrive inside of structures and others are unwelcome guest. The best method of control of rodents is exclusion. Mice only need an opening the size of a nickel to enter the building. Shrubs, trees and ground cover close to the building provides safe haven for many disease causing and carrying pest including ticks and rodents.
Pests that commonly infest and breed within structures include cockroaches, fruit flies, fungus gnats, rodents (mice and rats), and termites. In which case you will need to call a Structural Pest Control Expert. The National Pest Management Association lists companies active in the association. Information regarding state associations can also be found on its website. Information from this site may be helpful in developing specifications and narrowing lists of qualified vendors.
In 2004, The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) introduced a program called Quality Pro to recognize those business demonstrating professionalism and good business practices. In 2008, NPMA introduced QualityPro Green that adds to these standards with specific requirements for IPM.
IPM or Integrated Pest management is more than a search for opportunities to reduce pesticide use: IPM is a systematic approach to pest prevention and suppression that prioritizes non-chemical measures. Often there is linkage to other activities that can suppress pest or that caused the pest problem. Often, the use of pesticides is a treatment of symptoms rather than a solution that often is readily achievable. At the very least, there is often less toxic products that will work when pesticides are required.
We Recommend Bio-Fertility Treatment for your Lawn.
Gardening is really all about soil.
These products offer tomorrows technology today. Using Do it yourself products causes you to miss the latest scientific developments in plant care. These products are only available through professional lawn care professionals.
We to rebuild depleted soils and establish viable microbial populations that will create a naturally renewable source of fertility. Each treatment is rich in basic nutrients, microbial nutrients and beneficial microbes. Microbial Nutrients include Humic acids, sea kelp and other high quality ingredients. The Beneficial bacteria are the good guys that help make the essential soil nutrients available to the turf. Your lawn will require less fertilizer, be greener, more drought and insect resistant.
While fertilizer provides nutrients to plants, it does not solve a soil fertility problem. Soil rich in humus is full of beneficial micro-organisms. Thus supporting biological activity in the soil is the long-term solution. Humus creates a soil environment that supports beneficial nematodes and also bacteria such as milky spore that combat white grubs. Many other resident microbes attack and control disease pathogens that lurk in the soil. Humus is often lacking in residential yards and the soil is typically very compacted. See Your New Yard
Surveys show that about 75% of consumers are wary of using pesticides in the home. Many people today are avoiding certain synthetic (man-made) pesticides in favor of natural or "organic" products. Indeed we feel that over use and improper use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers cause more problems than they solve in the long run.
Technically, however regardless of whether a substance comes from natural or artificial sources, if it controls pests, it is a pesticide. As long as pests are around, chances are that people will use pesticides of one sort or another. Natural products improperly used can be more dangerous than a synthetic product used correctly. However, the thought process is much the same as "IPM" .
Synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides are avoided in an "organic" program. Often times they are not needed in a properly managed landscape. We have a saying, if you are not mulching or composting your lawn clippings then you are only renting your fertilizer. This is true any program Organic or not.
Many plants, when healthy will not subcumb to insect pest, this is particularly true of native plants. To many, gardening seems to be all about plants. Certainly each of the seemingly infinite variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables and grasses is fascinating. Using plantings to create landscapes and gardens is challenging and rewarding.
Ed's Lawn Services provides many services to support the organic gardener.
We can bring in small loads of products and help you with your project or we can do the work while you enjoy life in your back yard. Our first goal with any customer is to begin the process of building the soil. We wil never apply something in your lawn or garden without discussing the plan of action with you. We use only the highest quality products as well.
Safer for you and your family and easy on the pocket book. Plants love it. You will have a nice rich green lawn!
What is in Your Fertilizer?
Effectively, many fertilizers have heavy metals in them! Some states including Texas have begun regulating the amount of metals in fertilizers but how much is safe? There truly are no safe levels of lead. You can Google more about heavy metals and fertilizers if you want!
Fertilizer prices have practically skyrocketed in price the last few years. Many companies have looked for cheap sources of fertilizers. Eds Lawn Services on the other hand has found what we believe to be the most pure technical grade of plant food made. It is free of metals and safer for your family. Better yet, our prices are competitively priced at or below what the big boys charge.
For the DO It Yourself (DYI) home owner there are general guidelines that have been developed but all experts agree, soil test, soil conditioning, proper watering are key factors to a healthy lawn and gardens. The best time to fertilize is not the spring but in the fall between September 15 and October 15. Generally a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 (nitrogen - the first number, phosphorus - the second number, and potassium - the third number) sulfur coated slow release fertilizer is good for all out-door plants. Studies at Texas A&M show that Lawns receiving a fertilizer boost in the fall are more winter hardy, have a more healthy root system, and green-up earlier next spring.
Typical lawns need about 4 pound of nitrogen per year for nice green grass. A good schedule to follow for Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass and St. Augustine grass is the "Major Holidays Rule" - Divide your total nitrogen requirement for the year by four. Put down this rate of nitrogen on or near each of the four holidays: Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. This is an acceptable fertilizer program to follow, which does well for most lawns and gardens.
We take our excess clippings to a facility that will compost the material. Mulching the grass and leaving the clippings does not lead to thatch, this is typically caused over watering and fertilization. Mulched clippings break down relatively fast as the blades are 75% water. ELS Landscape does both; we bag and mulch mow lawns at various times of the year. We use our judgment based upon the growing conditions of each lawn so that the lawn looks great. Again, the soil test is very important.

Spruce is a pine wood from the evergreen family of trees. It is a somewhat yellow wood found in almost all the building materials you see. If you open your attic door and look in, you will see all spruce (pine) holding your house together. Most of the fences built with new houses are made with spruce. Left untreated, a spruce fence will last just 5 to 8 years. Properly treated, it will last between 8 and 12 years. Still, spruce fences never look as good or last as long as cedar fences. When a builder chooses a spruce fence, it is typically only intended to last long enough to sell the home to someone else.
Cedar is also a type of pine - one that is known for its fragrance and durability. It tends toward an orange color and is straighter and cleaner than spruce. Cedar comes in basically three grades: clear, grade 1, and grade 2. Clear cedar has no knots, looks perfect and looks like luxury furniture. At Eds, we use grade 1 cedar on 99% of our cedar fences and clear cedar on the others. We do not use grade 2 cedar. Left untreated, a cedar fence will last 15 to 20 years. Properly treated and maintained, it will last for 20 to 25 years. Grade 1 cedar is by far the most popular fence board being used today.
Pressure-treated wood is pressure treated to keep it from rotting, and you can spot pressure-treated wood by its characteristic green color. The process is great for lumber that is 2 inches by 6 inches or larger. We use the process for our kickboard along the bottom of a fence and for framing decks. Eds does not use pressure-treated wood for fence planks for one simple reason: When pressure-treated wood is sliced thinly enough for a fence plank, it tends to warp terribly.
"The fence looks amazing - we really do love it! The pool and backyard just wouldn't be the same without it... Thanks, for all the hard work in the heat, the schedule shuffling and the custom gate - it's great! Please feel free to use us as a reference anytime! Thanks again."

ALWAYS CHECK THE LICENSE OF THE PERSON MAKING THE
PESTICIDE APPLICATION TO BE SURE IT IS CURRENT
Residential & Commercial
What IS a Pesticide?
According to state law, a pesticide is a substance or mixture of substances used to destroy or control any undesirable for of animal or plant life, including substances that prevents, repels, mitigates, or otherwise interferes with a pest. The pest can be mice, flies, bacteria or even weeds. According to federal and state law, if a product label or the manufacturer claims something is a pesticide, it is regulated as one by the Untied States Environmental Protection Agency .
Substances used in lawn care and gardening to manage pests, including 'organic' materials, are pesticides. Occasionally you'll hear people say "pesticides" meaning insecticides thinking herbicides are something else. Herbicides are pesticides as are insecticides, fungicides, and rodenticides. Something that's natural or "organic" may seem safer and usually is. But keep in mind, being toxic may be a plant's best defense against getting eaten! Just remember, some things that are 'natural' can also be quite toxic.

Concrete Staining & Engraving
General Information
We are specializes in chemical staining and engraving that creates a one of a kind floor that cannot be duplicated. Each concrete surface will accept the stains differently based on chemical makeup, age, porosity, mix design, texture, ambient conditions and initial color of the substrate. The stains react chemically at the surface, penetrating and leaving unique permanent color effects. This is a stain, not an overlay or slurry mixture, it will never peel, crack, or chip.
The process of concrete engraving & staining involves the following:
• The perimeter of the concrete is edged to remove any dirt or grass from the surface.
• The concrete is thoroughly cleaned. All grease spots, oil residue, paint stains, etc. are neutralized and pressure washed.
• The concrete is acid etched if needed to provide a bond for the stain to the concrete.
• Cracks, if any, are repaired. (Though sometimes cracks are left in the concrete, which produces and aged brick or stone look)
• The penetrating concrete stain is applied.
• The design of your choice is engraved into your existing concrete.
• The job site is cleaned up.
• The sealer is applied
Stains & Sealants
Acid Stains
Acid Stain is not paint or a type of coating agent; rather, it's a coloring process involving a chemical reaction on a cementitious material. The color affect is unique to each stained surface and cannot be duplicated with other materials. A solution made with water, acid and inorganic salts, reacts with minerals already present in the concrete, and the result of this reaction is color. It works very well on new or old concrete. Acid Stain is a very durable product if properly protected with sealer or wax, and it can be applied to both interiors and exteriors. Acid stained interior floor surfaces are quickly replacing those areas where carpet used to be the norm.
What makes Acid Stain so attractive? Acid Stain gives concrete a mottled, variegated, marble-like look. Acid stained floors won't chip or crack like tile. The stain becomes part of the surface and is fade resistant, abrasion resistant, and won't peel. Stained surfaces are striking in appearance and add an artistic approach to flooring. The stain creates uneven, variegated and translucent color effects.
Many unique designs are possible. To achieve a special color effect, two or more stain colors may be intermixed before application or applied one over the other while wet. Deeper colors can be produced by using the same stain for two or more applications to the surface. The options on what look to achieve are limited only by one's imagination.
Pigmented Stains
Pigmented stains actually bond with concrete to form a tough shield. Because of this bonding process, concrete coatings will not fade, peel, or flake and they will maintain their attractive appearance for many years to come. Pigmented stain is the ideal finish designed to ad deeply penetrating protection and long lasting beauty to concrete surfaces such as driveways, patios, walkways, and garage floors. These concrete stains are highly resistant to abrasion. There are different pigmented stains applied to exterior and interior surfaces.
Concrete Sealers
We use an acrylic sealer formulated for use on interior and exterior vertical and horizontal brick, stone, and concrete.
• Features:
• Seals and protects.
• Provides a durable, glossy finish.
• Crystal clear, non-yellowing.
• Resists water, oil, gasoline, pool chemicals, UV rays.
• Protects from heavy traffic and hot tire pick up
Recommended uses:
• As a protective sealer for interior and exterior concrete surfaces, sidewalks, patios, and driveways.
• As a decorative glaze on masonry walls, cement block, flagstone decks and walls, brick, and other cementitious materials.
Concrete Staining & Engraving requires very little care, maintains its beauty, and the patterns and designs are guaranteed for the life of the concrete. Whether your application is residential or commercial, our engraving process is a sound property investment!
Concrete Engraving
• Concrete engraving is not a topping, the design is in the concrete not on it.
• The engraved pattern is guaranteed to last the life of the concrete.
• The engraving process is fast, clean, and leaves your surroundings undisturbed.
• Ordinary concrete can be remodeled to look like brick, tile, polished marble, flagstone, fieldstone, ashlars slate, cobblestone, geometric designs, corporate logos, or themed designs. Classic circular, arched, or straight patterns that look either brand new or with a long history can be engraved into existing concrete.
• Concrete engraving is for new or existing concrete surfaces.
• Provides a unique, economical, and low maintenance home improvement.
• Oil drippings and other stains wipe right off an interior or exterior surface.
• Resists surface scratches, tire marks, shoe marks, etc.
• Weeds cannot grow between these patterns and designs.
• These brick, tile patterns, or other designs can never come loose.
